Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has urged for a measured response following controversy surrounding captain Marc Guehi’s decision to personalize his rainbow armband.
Guehi, a devout Christian, wrote “Jesus” on the armband for the second consecutive match, defying Football Association regulations that prohibit religious messages on kits.
This action comes amidst the ongoing Rainbow Laces campaign, an initiative promoting inclusivity within football and tackling anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Ipswich Town, Glasner defended his captain: “Let’s take a deep breath. Everyone knows Marc. He’s a fantastic player and person, with great humility.
He wore the armband, a symbol of LGBTQ+ inclusion, which is about fighting discrimination – something Marc fully supports. We, in sports, stand united against all forms of abuse.”
Guehi’s actions, alongside Ipswich captain Sam Morsy’s refusal to wear the armband entirely due to his religious beliefs, could lead to sanctions from the FA.
Both players are expected to avoid wearing the armband for the remaining Rainbow Laces campaign ending on December 5th.
However, potential disciplinary measures remain unclear.
