Assin Central MP and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 presidential contender Kennedy Agyapong has announced his withdrawal from the party’s nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’, citing a violent incident involving one of his supporters.

In an interview with UTV, Mr. Agyapong revealed that he informed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP General Secretary of his decision.

“I told Dr. Bawumia I’m stepping back because of what transpired. I’ve also spoken to the General Secretary, and everyone agrees it’s the right move,” he stated.

His decision follows a violent episode on April 29, 2025, in the Bantama Constituency, where a young supporter—reportedly a KNUST student—was stabbed during a confrontation.

Eyewitnesses report that armed assailants, who allegedly issued pistol threats and fired several warning shots, attacked the students as they tried to prevent the theft of money given after the event.

The victim, whose name is being withheld, sustained a stab wound to the upper right rib and remains in critical condition.

Condemning the attack, Mr. Agyapong called it deeply troubling and pledged to support efforts to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

In response, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
