Ghanaian gospel artist Broda Sammy has raised alarm over the financial struggles facing young women in church, suggesting that these challenges are driving some to seek income through hookup culture.
Speaking in a TV interview he urged churches to provide more practical support to their members, warning that failing to do so could have dire consequences for the church community.
Broda Sammy remarked, “Some female church members are now engaging in hookups; there is no money.”
He pointed out that while churches often focus on donations and offerings, they possess significant financial resources that could alleviate their members’ hardships.
He noted that some congregations have been established for over 50 years and own their properties, thus incurring minimal expenses. This financial stability, he argues, should empower churches to offer meaningful assistance to those struggling.
“Some churches have been around for decades, with members who have been selling tomatoes at the market for years and giving their little 1 cedi as offerings but receive no help in return,” he explained.
Broda Sammy warned that if changes aren’t made, churches might see a decline in attendance. He called for a reevaluation of strategies for community engagement and emphasized that prioritizing members’ welfare is essential for the future of the church. “One day, there will be nobody to attend,” he cautioned.
