Kumawood actor and musician Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has criticized Charterhouse, organizers of the annual Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), calling them an “unserious organization.”
According to him, this is the reason his hit songs fail to secure nominations in the awards scheme.
In an exclusive interview with Lawson Media, LilWin expressed his frustrations, stating that even though some musicians receive nominations for just a single hit song, his multiple hits have gone unrecognized.
He acknowledged that while it bothers him occasionally, he views it as normal.
“I have over four hit songs, yet I have never been nominated. Meanwhile, someone can release one song, and it hits, and they get a nomination. But awards don’t bring anything,” LilWin remarked.
He further questioned the value of awards in Ghana, highlighting that there is no monetary reward attached to them.
“Awards don’t come with money, no two cedis or three cedis added. And then when you don’t get it, you’re sad? Are you a fool? I have more hits than all these new artists,” he said.
LilWin also lamented Ghana’s reluctance to accept multifaceted entertainers. He compared the Ghanaian entertainment industry to America, where stars like 50 Cent seamlessly transition between music and acting.
“In Ghana, we don’t accept two things. They won’t tolerate you being both an actor and a musician. But in America, someone like 50 Cent became an actor after music. Meanwhile, here, they know you deserve it, but they don’t want you to succeed in both fields.”
Despite his criticisms, LilWin dismissed the significance of awards, stating that even winning the coveted Artist of the Year award wouldn’t change his life. Instead, he emphasized the importance of hard work and securing performance gigs. “The most important thing is working hard and getting shows,” he concluded.
The Telecel Ghana Music Awards remains Ghana’s most prestigious music awards scheme, celebrating excellence in the industry.
However, LilWin’s remarks highlight lingering concerns about inclusivity and recognition for multifaceted talents in the entertainment space.
