The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted bail to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi. The bail is set at GHS50 million with two sureties, who must be verified.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the news on Wednesday, May 28, after Wontumi had been held for questioning at EOCO headquarters since Tuesday, May 27.

His arrest, reportedly linked to financial dealings with EXIM Bank, triggered strong reactions from NPP members.

On Tuesday, May 27, several party supporters and executives gathered outside the EOCO offices to demand his release. Among them were the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover.

Showing support on Wednesday, May 28, former Assin Central MP and past presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, offered to serve as one of the sureties for Wontumi.

This was confirmed by Kwesi Opoku, NPP’s Tema West Chairman and an ally of Agyapong, who said that Kennedy Agyapong made himself available after being briefed on the bail terms by Appiah-Kubi.

Appiah-Kubi also stated that the legal team was working to satisfy the bail conditions by the end of the day. However, as of now, the conditions have not yet been met.
