The Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to reject ongoing calls for the removal of Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa and her fellow commissioners—Mr. Samuel Tetteh, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and Dr. Peter Appiahene.

In a petition dated March 4, 2025, CDS Africa acknowledged the growing demands from civil groups like the Positive Transparency & Accountability Movement-Ghana and individuals such as Mr. Ofosu-Appiah Daniel. These groups argue for the commissioners’ dismissal, citing legal grounds.

However, CDS Africa contends that upholding their positions would better serve Ghana’s democratic integrity, maintain the Electoral Commission’s independence, and promote national stability.

“Choosing not to forward these petitions to the Chief Justice would demonstrate your Excellency’s resolve to preserve the independence of the EC and strengthen democratic governance,” the petition stated.

The organization further encouraged Mahama to set a democratic benchmark by retaining commissioners appointed by a predecessor, thereby protecting the EC from becoming a target of political reshuffles.

“You now have the chance to make history—by upholding continuity and shielding the EC from partisan pressures,” the petition concluded.
