The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed deep concern over the violence and unrest that have followed the 2024 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement, the Bishops condemned the rioting, looting, and other violent acts that have disrupted peace across various regions, leading to loss of life, destruction of property, and further division among Ghanaians.
“These actions are completely unacceptable and contradict the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that our nation holds dear,” the Bishops stated.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called for an immediate end to all forms of violence and urged Ghanaians to uphold the peace that has long been a hallmark of the country’s democratic process.
They stressed that using violence and destruction to express political differences undermines democracy and harms the most vulnerable members of society.
The Bishops called on political party leaders to show responsible leadership during this critical period. They urged leaders to denounce any unlawful actions by their supporters and to actively promote peace, respect for the rule of law, and national unity.
“Your role as leaders extends beyond the pursuit of power—it involves guiding your followers with wisdom, fostering peace, and ensuring the well-being of all Ghanaians,” they added.
The Bishops also appealed to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, urging them to remain vigilant and professional in addressing the situation.
They called for decisive action against those responsible for violence, emphasizing that perpetrators must be treated as criminals regardless of their political affiliations, while ensuring fairness and protecting citizens and property.
“Justice must be served,” the statement emphasized.
The Bishops invited religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to unite in restoring peace and national cohesion. They highlighted the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and unity in overcoming differences and moving forward together as one nation.
“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events,” the Bishops concluded, expressing hope that through collective commitment, the country will emerge stronger and more united.
The message from the Catholic Bishops adds to the growing calls for calm and responsible action as Ghana works through the aftermath of its closely contested elections.
