The Minority Members of Parliament have taken a firm stance against Speaker Alban Bagbin’s characterization of their caucus as a “micro-minority,” deeming it both inappropriate and unwarranted.

Leading the objection, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced the caucus’s displeasure during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, January 8. He strongly protested the term, asserting that it undermined the stature and contributions of the Minority.

“Mr. Speaker, we do not have any micro minority. The Minority caucus hereby protests the description given to us by Mr. Speaker,” Afenyo-Markin declared, urging the Speaker to use a more respectful term.

He reminded the house of the critical role the Minority played in securing Bagbin’s election as Speaker. “We seconded the motion for your election. When the so-called majority conspired against you, we stood our ground and protested. It was us—the Minority of conscience,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin called for the caucus to be addressed simply as “Minority” and rejected any diminutive terms that could diminish their role and influence.
