Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has signaled his intention to contest for the position of General Secretary when the party opens nominations.

Speaking on his potential candidacy, Dr. Kokofu revealed that several party members and grassroots supporters have encouraged him to step forward.

However, he emphasized that his immediate focus is on rebuilding and unifying the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“This is a time for reconstruction. We need to come together if we are to recapture power in 2028,” he said on the Ghana Se Sen Show with Kwame Tanko.

Dr. Kokofu urged the party leadership to reach out to members who have been suspended or distanced themselves from the NPP over the years, advocating for unconditional amnesty as a step toward reconciliation.

“Let’s grant amnesty unconditionally—we need them back,” he stressed.

His comments echoed sentiments expressed by Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central, who has also called on the NPP to reconcile with key figures like Alan Kyerematen and Paul Afoko in the interest of party unity.

Dr. Kokofu highlighted that enthusiasm for the NPP is resurging but cautioned that the party must actively rebuild its base.

“We need the media back. We need professionals back. We need teachers back,” he said, reflecting on past missteps like the implementation of teacher licensure exams.

“Did we consult the teachers before rolling out the policy? Now, the NDC has promised to scrap it after using it to campaign against us,” he added.
