Bryan Acheampong Announces Bid for NPP Flagbearer Position
Abetifi MP seeks party leadership with backing from Presbyterian Church, citing strong grassroots support.

Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has officially declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Acheampong made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Tuesday, June 24. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, he explained that his decision was informed by the findings of an exploratory team that spent a month engaging with NPP delegates across the country.
“A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations,” he said. “But as a product of the Presbyterian Church, it would be inappropriate for the moderator to hear about it first through the media. That’s why I’ve come to inform him personally.”
He added that the feedback from delegates reflected a desire for a leader with his skill set—qualities he believes are well aligned with the party’s current needs.
Dr. Acheampong also sought spiritual support from the church, requesting prayers and blessings as he prepares for the internal contest. In response, the Presbyterian Church leadership prayed for him, offering their support as he begins this new political chapter.
