Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash in northwestern Spain at the age of 28, just two weeks after marrying his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.

The devastating incident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday along the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora.

According to local reports from zamora24horas.com, Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André Jota—himself a professional footballer for Penafiel—when their vehicle crashed and caught fire. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services responded after Castilla y León’s 1-1-2 operations center received multiple calls reporting a car ablaze in the road. The Traffic Civil Guard, Zamora Fire Brigade, and the Health Emergencies Coordination Centre rushed to the site, but were unable to save the pair.

Jota had only recently shared joyful wedding photos with Rute, his partner since 2012, on social media, captioning them: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.” The couple, who have three children together, had been celebrating their new chapter as husband and wife.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes already pouring in for the talented forward known for his explosive pace, technical skill, and dedication on and off the pitch.
