Botswana is set to experience continued heavy rainfall until at least the end of February, raising fears of worsening floods in already affected regions, the government has warned.
In a statement, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment cautioned that persistent downpours will lead to further water accumulation and flash flooding across the country.
“The current rainfall situation is expected to persist throughout this week and possibly up to the end of next week (28th February 2025), potentially worsening conditions in already affected areas,” said ministry permanent secretary Boatametse Modukanele.
With rainfall amounts expected to exceed 50mm within 24 hours in many areas, authorities are bracing for further disruptions.
The warning follows days of relentless downpours that have inundated large parts of the country. The capital, Gaborone, is among the worst-hit, with submerged roads, damaged shopping centers, and flooded residential neighborhoods.
Major transportation routes remain impassable, causing significant disruptions, while residents in low-lying areas have been forced to evacuate their homes.
Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions, including relocating to higher ground and avoiding unnecessary travel, as Botswana prepares for more extreme weather.
