Biden Welcomes Trump Back to the White House with “Smooth Transition” Promise
Historic meeting signals the start of a formal transition as both leaders discuss national security and domestic policy
- Biden greeted Trump with a handshake and a promise for a smooth transition process
- The leaders discussed key national security and domestic issues
- Melania Trump did not meet Jill Biden, but both first ladies expressed goodwill for the transition
President Biden greeted President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday for a nearly two-hour meeting to discuss the transition process.
Unlike the 2020 transition, which lacked this gesture from Trump, Biden’s warm reception included a handshake and a friendly “Welcome, welcome back.”
Biden acknowledged the challenges of the political world but promised a smooth transition, emphasizing his administration’s readiness to support Trump’s needs. “Looking forward to a smooth transition,” Biden said.
Trump, in turn, expressed gratitude, calling the process “as smooth as it can get.”
The meeting, which focused on national security and domestic policy, was described by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre as “substantive.” It was attended by both White House chiefs of staff, Jeff Zients and Susie Wiles, but notably, Melania Trump did not join the first lady, Jill Biden, for the customary meeting between first ladies.
Melania’s office stated she would not attend but wished success for the transition.
This meeting marked the first direct encounter between the two since their heated 2020 debate.
Trump, fresh from his meeting with House Republicans, was met with a standing ovation as he reaffirmed his political mission.
Meanwhile, Jill Biden, at a separate event with graduating community college students, shared the First Family’s preparations for the transition ahead.
