Murtala Muhammed, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology, has argued against an immediate ban on plastic bag imports, stressing that such a move would not be effective without a comprehensive strategy.

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 30, he emphasized the importance of creating sustainable alternatives and fostering dialogue on plastic management.

Rather than rushing into a ban, Muhammed advocates for a phased approach, underscoring the necessity of conducting a thorough study to identify viable alternatives, like reusable containers and biodegradable packaging.

Drawing lessons from countries like Rwanda, he believes a careful balance of innovation and planning is essential before enforcing such a ban.
