Thai authorities have declared a state of emergency in Bangkok after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck, with its epicenter in Myanmar.
The quake caused severe damage across the city, including the collapse of a 30-story under-construction skyscraper in northern Bangkok, killing at least one person and injuring 50 others.
Panic spread as residents fled swaying buildings, and traffic came to a sudden halt. Tremors were also felt in China’s Yunnan province.
Myanmar’s military junta declared an “emergency situation” in key regions, including Mandalay and Naypyidaw, as buildings collapsed and people remained trapped under rubble.
Rescue efforts are underway in Bangkok and across Myanmar, a nation already struggling with civil war. Several aftershocks, including a 6.4-magnitude tremor, have further rocked the region. Despite the chaos, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport remains operational.
