Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament, stating that any legislator found involved in illegal mining, or galamsey, will face harsh consequences.

Speaking during the plenary session on Tuesday, January 28, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the urgent need for Parliament to take strong action against the destructive effects of galamsey, which he noted has caused severe environmental damage across the nation.

He reminded MPs that, as public figures and representatives, they must lead by example, and refrain from participating in activities that endanger the country’s natural resources.

Bagbin called on all lawmakers to fully dissociate themselves from galamsey, underscoring the importance of confronting the issue head-on.

“Honourable members, we must tackle galamsey directly. If any of you are involved, I urge you to reconsider. As a House, we must lead the way and take the necessary action if any of you are found guilty of galamsey involvement,” he warned.

His remarks come at a time when illegal mining continues to threaten Ghana’s environment, especially its water bodies and forests, despite previous efforts to curb the practice.

Bagbin’s comments reflect growing concern over the persistent involvement of some politicians, including MPs, in illegal mining activities.
