At least 20 people were killed when armed gunmen launched a brutal assault on a gold mining community in Nigeria’s northwestern Zamfara state, according to local sources and Amnesty International.

While the attackers’ exact motive remains unknown, Zamfara has long suffered from violent gangs known for kidnapping civilians and targeting security forces.

Eyewitness Ismail Hassan described a harrowing scene in Gobirawa Chali, located in the Maru local government area, where hundreds of gunmen stormed the area on Thursday afternoon, opening fire on miners.

The ensuing chaos and gun battle left more than 20 people dead. Another resident, Isah Ibrahim, reported that 21 bodies were later recovered, with numerous others wounded.

Amnesty International further revealed that the assailants went door-to-door, killing residents in a calculated rampage.

The incident is part of a disturbing surge in violence by criminal groups in Nigeria’s northwest, where the military is already stretched thin battling insurgencies and regional conflicts across the country.
