Ashanti Regional Police Command Clamps Down on Criminal Gang; One Dead, Several Arrested

In a major breakthrough against violent crime, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has apprehended a gang of notorious armed robbers responsible for a wave of violent residential robberies across the Kumasi Metropolis.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the M.A. Alhassan Conference Hall, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, revealed that the arrests followed a well-coordinated, intelligence-led operation conducted by a joint team from the KNUST District Police Command and the Regional Operations Unit.

The operation, executed on Friday, June 27, 2025, around 11:30 a.m., came in response to a string of brutal robberies reported in communities including Abuakwa, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Dechembuoso, and Appiadu. Victims were often held hostage at gunpoint while their homes were ransacked for valuables including cash, electronics, mobile phones, and personal effects.

During the operation, one suspect sustained gunshot wounds in an exchange of gunfire with police and was later pronounced dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Another key suspect, Yahaya Nuhu, is currently on the run and being actively pursued by police.

Key Arrests and Recoveries

Three major suspects were initially apprehended:

  • Kwadwo Kyei Baffour, 39

  • Joseph Oppong alias Joe, 30

  • Bernard Owusu Ansah alias Hot Boy, 27

From their various hideouts, the police recovered:

  • Multiple laptops, tablets, and mobile phones

  • Television sets, wristwatches, and WiFi routers

  • Three vehicles: a Kia Morning and two Toyota Corollas (Reg. Nos. GX 4388-19 and AS 4777-22)

  • Robbery masks

Notably, suspect Kwadwo Kyei Baffour confessed to participating in several of the robberies and admitted to committing a rape during one such attack.

Further police operations led to the arrest of additional accomplices:

  • Kwadwo Konadu, 28

  • James Asare Boateng, 26

  • Emmanuel Asiedu, 27

  • Maxwell Gyimah, 30

Weapons Recovered:

  • A Taurus pistol with 4 rounds of 9mm ammunition

  • An NP Cal 9x19mm pistol

  • A Jojeff pump-action shotgun with 33 rounds

  • A Bruni Mod 92 Auto Cal 8mm pistol

  • A Ricol 15-0924 pump-action shotgun

  • A single-barrel shotgun

  • A converter Foocio Cal 4.5mm pistol

Injured suspect Bernard Owusu Ansah, currently under police guard at KATH, led officers to the discovery of more weapons used in their operations.

Two further arrests were made:

  • Kelvin Adomako, alias Chemicals, 29, arrested at Ejisu Hwereso

  • Daniel Dwumor, 46, arrested at Bantama for allegedly providing critical information used during a robbery near KNUST

All suspects are in lawful custody and will be processed for court in the coming days.

Police Call for Public Support

DCOP Teye-Cudjoe lauded the swift response of the police units involved and expressed appreciation for the public’s cooperation.

He reassured residents that the Police Service remains committed to combating crime and maintaining peace and security in the region.

He urged the public to continue providing timely information to the police and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest station.

“We will not relent in our efforts to rid Kumasi and the Ashanti Region of criminal elements. The safety of our communities is our top priority,” the Commander emphasized.

The search for fugitive suspect Yahaya Nuhu continues. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to assist the police.
