Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars, has launched a strong social media attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of exploiting his popularity for political gain in the run-up to the 2024 General Election.
Gyan, who had been named to the NPP’s manifesto committee for Youth and Sports, was initially expected to leverage his fame and influence to galvanize young people and drive national development.
However, just weeks before the election, Gyan abruptly resigned from the role, sparking speculation and controversy.
In a candid Instagram Live session on January 2, 2025, Gyan opened up about the betrayal he felt from the party.
According to the former football star, his initial intention was to use his platform to support the youth and contribute to the country’s growth, especially in light of his previous efforts funded out of his own pocket.
“I joined the NPP because I believed I could achieve great things with the right support,” Gyan said. “I had already done a lot on my own, but with state resources, I believed I could take things to another level. All I wanted was to help the youth.”
However, Gyan claims that he soon realized his involvement was less about the youth and more about the party’s political agenda. He says the NPP used his popularity and fanbase as a tool to attract votes during a time when many Ghanaians were struggling with economic hardship.
“They wanted to use my fan base to draw in voters. I was used, and in the process, I lost my respect in front of the people,” Gyan revealed.
In a fiery conclusion to his message, he declared: “God is not going to forgive anyone involved in this.”
The video has since gone viral, with many people reacting to Gyan’s bold statements. His comments mark a significant fallout with the NPP, leaving his future political involvement in question.
