The Generational Rights Protection Society has called off its planned protest for today, Tuesday, April 29, following a meeting with the Accra Police Command.

The group had initially intended to extend their demonstration, which began on Monday, April 28, to push for stronger action against illegal mining, or galamsey.

After a closed-door conversation with police officials, the protesters agreed to delay the event to allow for further talks and to set a new date.

Co-convener Kwame Appiah-Kubi expressed gratitude for the cooperation with law enforcement throughout the protest.

He stated that, despite the postponement, their objectives had already been met, particularly through widespread media coverage and social media attention.

He noted that the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, along with the police, requested the delay to ensure proper preparations.

Despite the challenges, the group accepted the request, confident that their message had already gained significant traction.

“The purpose has been achieved,” said Appiah-Kubi, highlighting the protest’s strong presence on platforms like Twitter.
