Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has defended Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. following his red card against Valencia, expressing hope that the player will avoid a suspension.
Vinicius was sent off for slapping goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Valencia.
“It wasn’t a red, it was a yellow, and that’s why we hope he will not face any suspension,” Ancelotti said.
The manager acknowledged the challenges Vinicius faces, including the constant racist abuse he endures in Spain.
“It’s difficult being in his shoes,” Ancelotti said. “It’s not easy to endure everything he goes through, including the insults. It’s not simple, but he’s trying to improve.”
Vinicius Jr. has faced significant racial abuse throughout his time in Spain. Earlier this year, three Valencia fans were sentenced to prison for racially abusing him during a La Liga match.
Real Madrid will face Deportiva Minera in the Copa del Rey on Monday.
