President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, a landmark project designed to reduce traffic congestion on the North and South corridors of the Tema Motorway.
This new infrastructure aims to improve connectivity and cut down travel times for commuters.
The Flower Pot Interchange includes a robust 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct, complete with asphaltic concrete surfacing. It features a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie towards Airport Hills and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the Motorway heading towards Tema.
Additionally, the project incorporates a new road through the old East Legon tunnel, pedestrian walkways, and modern road furniture, such as streetlights and traffic signals.
Beginning in March 2017, the project was carried out by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited, with Deoke Consult Ltd as the consultant.
The construction was funded by the Government of Ghana and Afrexim Bank, totaling GHS 677,839,999.5, with a completion timeline of 93 months.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo hailed the Flower Pot Interchange as a “legacy for the future” and expressed immense pride in unveiling a project that represents his government’s vision for a modern and inclusive Ghana.
“It is with great pride and honor that I declare the Flower Pot Interchange officially commissioned. This is not just the opening of new infrastructure; it is the realization of a vision for Ghana’s future—one focused on sustainable progress, inclusivity, and national pride,” the President remarked.
Reflecting on his administration’s progress since 2017, President Akufo-Addo recalled the promise he made to transform Ghana’s infrastructure. He highlighted the essential role of roads in national development, emphasizing that they are not merely physical connections but vital enablers of opportunity, prosperity, and a better quality of life.
“When we took office in 2017, we understood that true national development is built upon a foundation of well-planned and executed infrastructure. Roads are not just pathways; they lead to opportunity, prosperity, and a higher standard of living for all.”
The President further reinforced that the Flower Pot Interchange stands as a testament to his government’s unwavering commitment to progress.
“Today, with the commissioning of this interchange, we affirm that our commitment to progress is not just words—it is concrete action, embodied in stone and steel.”
