Former President returns to national spotlight as Ghana commemorates 68 years of independence

- This year’s celebration is scaled-down due to economic constraints but maintains its significance
- President Mahama emphasizes unity, resilience, and patriotism in his speech
Former President Nana Akufo-Addo made a notable return to the national stage by attending Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House.
This marks his first public appearance at a national event since he handed over power to President John Dramani Mahama.
Akufo-Addo’s attendance at the scaled-down ceremony comes after his absence from President Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address last week, drawing attention to his involvement in this year’s commemoration.
This year’s Independence Day, themed “Reflect, Review, Reset,” takes place at the Office of the President instead of the traditional Black Star Square due to economic constraints. The ceremony includes a Military Guard of Honour, cultural performances by schoolchildren, and a special poetry recital by a senior high school student.
In his speech, President Mahama is expected to highlight the importance of national unity, resilience, and patriotism.
The government reassured the public that while this year’s event is more modest, it doesn’t diminish the significance of the occasion, emphasizing a responsible approach to public spending.
As Ghanaians come together to honor the country’s independence, the enduring legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other freedom fighters continues to inspire the nation’s journey forward.
