Afari Duodu, famously known as ‘Bulgaria,’ a revered figure in Ghanaian politics, has declared that President Akufo-Addo is the worst leader in the history of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in relation to the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana Se Sen on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Duodu emphasized that the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections cannot be blamed on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, but squarely on Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
He pointed out that John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won decisively with 56.55% of the valid votes, reinforcing the NDC’s dominance with over 180 parliamentary seats. This leaves the NPP with the difficult task of regrouping under Bawumia’s leadership.
Duodu, often called the “Blind Historian,” compared Akufo-Addo’s leadership unfavorably to that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, claiming Kufuor’s tenure was far superior. He described Akufo-Addo as overly arrogant, which, according to Duodu, was a major factor in Bawumia’s downfall.
“There has never been a president in Ghana’s history as arrogant as Akufo-Addo,” Duodu said.
He recalled an instance where the president, in an interview with the Kwabere people, dismissed their concerns about poor roads by stating that if they did not vote for him, it didn’t matter. Duodu questioned, “If you were in their position, would you have said that?”
He also blamed unpopular decisions made by Akufo-Addo for the NPP’s heavy defeat. “Akufo-Addo’s credibility has evaporated into thin air,” he asserted.
Looking to the future, Duodu noted that it will be a long time before the NPP can elect a presidential candidate from the Eastern Region due to Akufo-Addo’s poor leadership.
Despite his harsh criticism of the president, Duodu stated that Dr. Bawumia was not the wrong candidate for the election.
He revealed that he had predicted the NPP’s loss based on historical patterns and the timing of the election, but had refrained from making any public comments that might harm the Bawumia campaign.
Duodu explained that he shared his political views privately, without the ‘Bulgaria’ persona, in order to avoid damaging the NPP’s efforts.
