President Nana Akufo-Addo departed from Accra on October 19 for Samoa, where he will attend the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from October 21-26, 2024.
This meeting aims to elect a new Secretary-General for the Commonwealth.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, is in the running against candidates from The Gambia and Lesotho for this prestigious position.
According to Minister of Information Fatimatu Abubakar, 56 Commonwealth leaders will cast their votes to select the next Secretary-General.
President Akufo-Addo’s presence in Samoa is to rally support for Ayorkor Botchwey’s candidacy.
Abubakar emphasized Ghana’s strong ties within the Commonwealth and expressed confidence in Botchwey’s leadership potential.
She noted Ayorkor Botchwey’s impressive track record in various diplomatic committees and her vision for fostering climate resilience, enhancing trade and investment, and leveraging technology for youth opportunities.
Abubakar believes that if elected, Ayorkor Botchwey will significantly benefit developing nations, promoting trade and investment across Africa.
She also plans to engage in discussions on youth and sports at breakfast meetings during the event. The gathering aims to strengthen multilateral relations among the Commonwealth’s 56 independent member states, further enhancing trade and investment opportunities.
Abubakar encouraged Ghanaian women to draw inspiration from Ayorkor Botchwey’s bold ambition to lead the Commonwealth.
