- Afenyo Markin questions the Attorney General’s authority
- The Minority Leader calls for the Attorney General to explain his powers and actions in authorizing an arrest
- Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga defends the Attorney General
The Minority Leader, Mr. Alexander Afenyo Markin, has firmly asserted that the Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, does not possess the legal power to authorize the arrest of any individual, as outlined in Article 88/3 of the 1992 Constitution.
Afenyo’s remarks come after Dr. Ayine claimed in a media interview that he had given the go-ahead for the arrest of Professor Ameyaw Akumfi in connection with an investigation.
The Minority Leader has since called on Parliament to summon the Attorney General to clarify where he derived the authority to sanction the arrest of Prof. Akumfi.
In response, the Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, defended Dr. Ayine, asserting that the Attorney General acted within his rights.
Ayariga emphasized that any citizen could initiate an arrest if there is sufficient evidence, suggesting that Afenyo Markin should file a parliamentary question if he seeks further clarification on the matter.
