Adams Mahama Murder Case: Gregory Afoko Granted GH₵500K Bail After Nearly a Decade Behind Bars
High Court grants bail to key suspect in the 2015 Adams Mahama murder case as legal battle continues.

- Afoko secures GH₵500,000 bail with two sureties after nearly 10 years in detention
- His initial trial ended without a verdict, leading to a court-ordered retrial
- Despite bail, the state remains committed to prosecuting the case
After nearly 10 years behind bars, Gregory Afoko, a prime suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.
The court set bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, marking a significant twist in a case that has dragged on for almost a decade.
Afoko had previously applied for bail twice without success. His latest application, filed on February 17, was granted, offering a glimmer of hope in his long-running legal battle.
Arrested in 2015, Afoko was accused of conspiring with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga residence.
His trial began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, but the jury returned a hung verdict on both charges—murder and conspiracy to commit murder—leading to a court-ordered retrial.
Following the verdict, he was re-arrested and denied bail. However, on Friday, his legal team successfully argued for his release pending trial.
While the bail represents a breakthrough for Afoko’s defense, the legal battle is far from over, as the state remains committed to pursuing the case.
