The Presidential entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium, which will soon host Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers, has become a dumping ground, just weeks before the Black Stars face Chad in a crucial home match.
Despite the stadium’s pitch being in good condition for matches, a recent tour revealed that key areas of the facility are in poor condition, especially the Presidential entrance, which has been overtaken by discarded items.
Broken appliances, faulty machines, fridges, plastic chairs, and tables are all dumped along the pathway.
Additionally, the water supply and electricity room are in disarray. The room is dark, with exposed wires and a hole in one corner, highlighting safety concerns. Nearby, another room near the scoreboard light is similarly filled with trash and shows signs of rodent damage, including rat holes.
The structural integrity of the facility is also in question, with visible cracks signaling deterioration in key areas. The washrooms are in a similarly sorry state, with a foul stench making them nearly unbearable for users.
Offices within the stadium, such as the Head of the Technical Department’s office, are suffering from power outages, damaged ceilings, and broken tiles.
The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG), which works to highlight neglected and deteriorating projects across the country, is calling on the Sports Ministry to take swift action to address the issues of filth and disrepair.
Ernest Banama, a member of GPMG stressed that the group’s commitment to drawing attention to the problem and taking steps toward improvement while awaiting government support.
The Accra Sports Stadium, famously known as the Nation’s Wembley, underwent a significant renovation costing GH¢12.5 million for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2018.
The current state of the facility, just ahead of an important international fixture, raises concerns about its readiness for future events.
