Ibrahim Kayaba, a 31-year-old Togolese farmer and one of West Africa’s most wanted criminals, has been remanded in police custody for three weeks by the Accra Gbsese District Court.

The case is being presided over by Her Worship Akosua Appiah Anaafi Gyasi.

Kayaba is one of eight suspects facing murder charges. Police Inspector Richard Ackumey, leading the prosecution, revealed that while four of the suspects had been arrested earlier, Kayaba’s arrest brings the total number of apprehended individuals to five.

Those previously arrested and granted bail include Seidu Sambian, Bashiru Alhassan (also known as Culture), Lamonque Joseph (Abu Signoini), and Kalmogue Guinansoia (Sumaila).

The incident dates back to April 16, 2022, when the Accra Regional CID received information that a group of men had murdered a man and buried his body in an uncompleted building in Adjen-Kotoku.

Police responded to the scene, arresting Seidu Sambian, who was linked to the murder. The body of the victim, identified as Kwadwo Adama Kuraj, was discovered beneath a pile of sand at the site.

During police questioning, it emerged that the group, including Kayaba, had been involved in the killing.

Inspector Ackumey detailed that Lamonque Joseph, the group leader, had ordered the murder after learning that Kuraj had betrayed him by taking GH₵800,000 from his client without his knowledge. Joseph instructed Sambian to cover the body with sand after the murder.

As investigations continued, several suspects were arrested, but others, including Kayaba, had gone into hiding.

The prosecutor also revealed that some of the accused had traveled to Kumasi to lure the victim and another missing person to Accra for a meeting, where the murder took place.

Kayaba, along with his accomplices, is accused of being part of a group that carried out the crime. A Toyota Corolla, believed to have been used to transport the victim to the crime scene, was retrieved from Sambian.

The case remains under investigation, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Despite the case being sent to the Attorney General’s office over two years ago, no advice has been received yet. Inspector Ackumey assured the court that he would expedite the investigation to avoid further delays.

The case has been adjourned to February 17, 2025, when all the accused will appear in court.
