Residents and institutions are urged to comply with the one-month restriction on loud noises and drumming

Story Highlights
  • Starting today, Accra enforces a citywide noise restriction until June 12, 2025
  • A task force will monitor the ban, with legal actions for violations
  • The ban is part of preparations for the Ga Homowo festival

Starting today, May 12, 2025, Accra enters a month-long period of quiet as a citywide ban on noise-making and drumming officially begins.

This annual tradition, enforced by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), is a key part of preparations for the Ga people’s Homowo Festival and will run through June 12, 2025.

The directive prohibits all forms of public noise, including the use of loudspeakers, drumming, tambourines, roadside preaching, and funeral ceremonies. A statement released by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, emphasized that the ban covers all individuals, institutions, and communities within the AMA’s jurisdiction.

To ensure compliance, a dedicated task force—working alongside the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), local assemblies, and the Ghana Police Service—will patrol the city. Offenders will face legal consequences.

It’s worth noting that not all Ga communities observe the Homowo festival on the same date.

As such, areas like Osu, La, Nungua, Tema, Kpone, Prampram, and Ningo will impose their own noise bans later, with announcements expected after June 12, 2025.
