President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, as the Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. This announcement was made on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Gomashie, a respected actress, film producer, and scriptwriter, has a long history of involvement in Ghana’s arts and cultural sectors. She previously served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts from 2013 to 2017, during the first term of Mahama’s presidency, when the ministry was established.
Currently, she represents the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament for Ketu South and holds the esteemed position of Queen Mother in the Aflao Traditional Area. Gomashie’s academic credentials include a Master of Philosophy in African Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, both from the University of Ghana.
Her dedication to advancing Ghana’s arts and culture is evident from her key role in initiatives such as the drafting of the Ghana Culture Policy and the Creative Arts Industry Bill. Gomashie has also contributed to the creative industry on the international stage, serving on the Film Federation of the African Union (FEPACI) and the ECOWAS Committee for the Reparation of Stolen Artefacts of Africa.
She was instrumental in the creation of the Creative Arts Council (now known as the Creative Arts Agency), an organization designed to regulate and coordinate the activities of Ghana’s diverse creative sectors.
With her extensive experience both in Ghana and globally, many industry professionals see Gomashie as a fitting choice for the role of Minister, believing her in-depth knowledge and leadership will propel the sector forward.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts oversees 13 key agencies, including the Ghana Tourism Authority, National Film Authority, and the National Theatre, among others.
