A cholera outbreak in the Agona West Municipality has tragically claimed three lives in Agona Swedru and nearby towns in the Central Region.

Of the 200 suspected cases, 11 have been confirmed by health officials at the Swedru Municipal Government Hospital.

Agona West Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Simon Asare, shared the grim news at a recent stakeholder meeting, revealing that the three fatalities were part of the confirmed cholera cases.

He reassured the public that the Assembly is taking swift action to control the spread of the disease, with Agona Nyakrom and Agona Nkum identified as key hotspots.

The meeting, which included community leaders, politicians, market women, CSOs, media representatives, and drivers’ unions, saw a commitment to collaboration between the Assembly and health officials to eliminate the disease.

As part of immediate measures, the Assembly has deployed water tankers to Agona Nkum and surrounding villages after a major pipeline failure disrupted the local water supply. The Ghana Water Company has been urged to expedite repairs.

Additionally, a three-month grace period has been given for residents to install toilets in their homes, and non-compliance will result in stringent action. A decongestion exercise is also planned for Swedru’s Central Business District to improve traffic flow and enhance cleanliness in the area.
