Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has pledged to sacrifice everything to ensure the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, into law in 2025.

Addressing traditional leaders and NDC supporters on January 26, Bagbin emphasized his determination to uphold Ghana’s cultural and moral values.

“I’m willing to sacrifice my life for this cause,” Bagbin declared, reaffirming his commitment to the bill’s passage. He also revealed plans to consult with the Minister for Justice and Attorney General on advancing the legislation, which had previously expired with the 8th Parliament.

Bagbin criticized the former president for refusing to assent to the bill, describing it as unconstitutional, and vowed to push forward with the new administration’s support. “Parliament is the authority for passing laws, not the president. That decision was wrong, and you all punished him for that,” Bagbin stated.

Assuring his supporters, he promised that the bill would secure presidential approval this year. “This will not take time; it will be passed this year. It is ungodly, and nobody should joke with me on this,” Bagbin emphasized.

The Anti-LGBTQ Bill continues to spark intense national debate, with supporters seeing it as a defense of Ghanaian values, while critics express concerns over human rights and international reputation. Bagbin’s remarks have once again brought the issue to the forefront, with the nation awaiting the next steps.
