Nana Akwasi Agyeman IV, the Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, has vehemently denied claims made by former Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, that the region’s chiefs funded the controversial statue of former President Akufo-Addo.
The statue, unveiled during Akufo-Addo’s November 2024 thank-you tour at Sekondi’s Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, sparked significant controversy.
In an exclusive interview with a Takoradi-based radio station, Nana Agyeman revealed that he was caught off guard during the event and had no prior knowledge of the statue’s existence.
“I was ambushed by Okyere Darko Mensah to participate. The chiefs of the Western Region did not fund this statue, and I was unaware of any discussions about it,” he stated.
The chief clarified that no chief had contributed financially to the statue, nor was there any formal meeting among the chiefs to approve such an honor for the former president.
Nana Agyeman described how the event unfolded unexpectedly when he was invited to join the President’s tour. It was only upon arriving at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital that he discovered the “gift” was actually a statue.
Despite his initial reluctance, Nana Agyeman chose not to disrupt the ceremony and reluctantly took part in unveiling the statue. In his speech, he personally thanked Akufo-Addo for his previous visit to him in the hospital after an attack in 2019, clarifying he was speaking solely for himself, not on behalf of the region’s chiefs.
The statue, which attracted public criticism over its perceived lack of connection to the region’s development, was destroyed on January 13, 2025, following a wave of public outrage.
