The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has strongly condemned the invasion of an abandoned concession at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine by illegal miners, which led to a deadly confrontation with military forces.

The clash resulted in nine fatalities and numerous injuries.

Calling the invasion “unacceptable,” Otumfuo reflected on a similar situation in 2016, when the mining company leased part of its abandoned concession to miners, only for the arrangement to be contested. The Asantehene emphasized that such actions cannot be justified by a desire for livelihood, asserting that “the law must be obeyed.”

Speaking during a visit by AGA officials to the Manhyia Palace, he highlighted the critical connection between the mining company and the community, which thrives on mutual cooperation.

Otumfuo condemned individuals who take the law into their own hands, disrupting legitimate business operations and community growth.

The Asantehene also acknowledged government efforts to resolve tensions between small-scale miners and mining corporations, citing strengthened security measures to protect both residents and AGA employees.

He awaits a planned stakeholder meeting with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to discuss policies and solutions for combating illegal mining across Ghana.
