Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, Minister-Designate for the Interior, made it clear that the decision to keep or remove heads of the country’s security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police, rests solely with President John Dramani Mahama.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 24, Muntaka stated that while he may offer recommendations, the final call will be made by the President.

This statement came in response to questions from the Ranking Member of the Committee, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, about the future of current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, under the new administration.

In light of growing calls for Dampare’s removal, Muntaka emphasized that his role would not extend to making personnel decisions for security agencies, reaffirming that only the President has the authority to make such determinations.

He assured the Committee that the President will assess the performance of all security heads in line with his vision and the national interest, but reiterated that he himself would not be making any individual decisions regarding their tenure.
