Energy Minister John Jinapor has categorically stated that the government does not intend to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Addressing concerns raised by recent media reports, Minister Jinapor clarified that the government’s focus is on involving the private sector in the management of ECG to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery.

“Let me assure the nation that, we have not decided to sell ECG,” Minister Jinapor emphasized during the inauguration of a seven-member technical committee tasked with developing a comprehensive privatization plan for ECG. “Ours is to ensure that we get the private sector involved and we also want to emphasize local participation.”

The Minister stressed the importance of a transparent and inclusive process, emphasizing the need for extensive consultation with stakeholders, including workers, unions, consumers, and other key players.

“We have told them to complete all these exercises within one month. We want a very competitive and transparent process so that we can turn the sector around. The energy sector is bleeding and if nothing is done in the shortest possible time, the sector will collapse,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama recently indicated the possibility of privatizing ECG as part of broader efforts to address challenges within the country’s power distribution system.

However, Minister Jinapor emphasized that the government is exploring various options for private sector involvement, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and improving service delivery to Ghanaians.
