George Opare Addo, the Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, has stressed that providing alternative livelihoods is a crucial solution to combating illegal mining, or “galamsey,” in Ghana.

Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo, called for a shift in mindset and the adoption of sustainable mining practices to protect the environment.

Opare Addo explained that poverty in mining communities often drives individuals to engage in illegal mining activities, and addressing this root cause is essential to tackling the galamsey crisis. He advocates for the introduction of alternative livelihood programs to reduce poverty and create long-term, sustainable employment opportunities in these areas.

By focusing on these initiatives, Opare Addo believes that communities can transition away from illegal mining, supporting both environmental preservation and economic development.

He envisions a Ghana where mining is practiced sustainably, without harming the environment.

He also highlighted the importance of educating young people in mining communities to embrace better practices, moving away from outdated methods.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Opare Addo is committed to finding sustainable solutions that will help eradicate poverty and reduce illegal mining in the country.
