Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has dismissed allegations that ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo rented private jets for domestic trips during his presidency.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on January 22, 2025, in response to Majority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza’s accusations, Nitiwul clarified that while Akufo-Addo occasionally used private jets for international flights outside of West Africa, such instances were rare, with commercial airlines like Emirates, British Airways, and Qatar Airways being frequently used for his travels.

Nitiwul emphasized that Akufo-Addo never rented a private jet for domestic travel and confirmed the former president’s use of the official presidential aircraft, which has been in operation for the past eight months after its return from France.

The debate also saw Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for ex-President John Dramani Mahama, defending Mahama’s use of a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for official trips.

He assured that no taxpayer funds were used, as the jet was made available for free, and explained that the presidential aircraft is currently undergoing review by the Communications Squadron of the Ghana Air Force.
