UN warns that without urgent humanitarian aid, millions of children could face severe malnutrition by 2025

Story Highlights
  • Ongoing violence in northeast Nigeria threatens the nutrition and survival of over 2.5 million children by 2025
  • Immediate humanitarian support is essential to provide food, water, and sanitation to displaced children and families
  • Preventive action is needed to avert a widespread malnutrition crisis

Over 2.5 million children in Nigeria’s conflict-stricken northeast face severe malnutrition in 2025 if immediate intervention is not provided, according to a UN official.

Trond Jensen, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Nigeria, warned that ongoing violence has displaced thousands, pushing them into overcrowded camps and neighboring countries like Niger and Chad.

The violence has led to a lack of access to clean water and basic needs. Jensen emphasized the critical need for funding to support humanitarian efforts, which aim to protect displaced individuals and address their urgent needs for water, sanitation, and healthcare.

“We must act now to prevent further suffering,” he stated, stressing that prevention is key to saving lives.
