Dr. Charles Aheto-Tsegah, former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has called for urgent reforms in the management of Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Ghana, particularly regarding student feeding costs.

In an interview, Dr. Aheto-Tsegah proposed that both boarding and day students should contribute towards their meal expenses. This, he believes, would help alleviate the financial burden on the government, which has faced challenges in consistently funding student meals.

Dr. Aheto-Tsegah also emphasized the need for infrastructural improvements in SHSs, advocating for measures to reduce overcrowding.

He argued that overcrowded schools not only hinder effective learning but also pose health risks, including the spread of diseases.

To address these issues, he suggested expanding the day school system and increasing community day schools to provide students with closer and more accessible schooling options.

He also recommended revising the Computerized School Selection and Placement System to align with these changes.

In his proposal, Dr. Aheto-Tsegah explained that students who attend school as boarders should pay for their meals directly to the school.

He further suggested that the government could identify students facing significant financial challenges and provide their meals at no cost.
