Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister-Designate, has firmly expressed his opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, calling them incompatible with his personal values and ethics. He emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural and moral values.

In a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama proposed a new strategy regarding the ongoing debate over the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

He suggested that the bill be presented as a government-backed initiative rather than a private member’s bill, believing it would lend the legislation more legitimacy and increase its chances of passing in Parliament.

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Iddrisu stated, “It’s a cultural wrong, and as a Muslim, you know where I stand on this matter. It is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics.

He further explained, “I do not believe that many Ghanaian parents would want their children raised in a way that contradicts the values I and many others were brought up with as Ghanaians.”

Iddrisu underscored the importance of maintaining Ghana’s unique social and cultural values, stating, “We are a country that defines our values, both social and cultural, and we should expect others to respect those values.” He concluded, “We have a duty to preserve these values within the framework of our constitution.”
