Haruna Iddrisu, Minister-Designate for Education, has reaffirmed that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention of canceling the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.

Instead, Mahama aims to refine and expand the initiative to ensure sustainability and maximize its benefits for Ghanaians.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Iddrisu clarified misconceptions, emphasizing Mahama’s pledge to enhance Free SHS as part of his 2024 election campaign.

“We are committed to reviewing Free SHS to make it more robust and inclusive,” Iddrisu stated, assuring that the policy aligns with constitutional mandates to broaden access to education.

He also revealed plans for a stakeholder forum to gather recommendations for improving the education sector. “President Mahama’s goal is not to scrap Free SHS but to expand and strengthen it for the betterment of all.”
