The violent confrontation occurred late Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, when about 60 illegal miners breached the security fence and attempted to access the mine’s Deep Decline area.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners, armed with locally made rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, and gas cylinders, fired on military personnel when confronted.
Addressing the tragic incident, Mr. Kwarteng emphasized the need for accountability and justice. He confirmed engaging with local police commands, who assured him that investigations are underway. He also urged the Military Command to conduct a detailed review of the events leading to the tragedy.
“It is essential that the findings are presented to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure transparency and accountability,” Mr. Kwarteng stated, further urging the government to expedite the process.
President Mahama has already directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident, while Mr. Kwarteng conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for swift justice.
