President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to use his influence in helping to overcome Ghana’s current economic difficulties.

Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration at the Manhyia Palace on January 19, Mahama acknowledged the Asantehene’s instrumental role in promoting economic growth during his previous tenure.

The  president reiterated his determination to drive development in the Ashanti Region, particularly by completing stalled infrastructure projects, especially in the healthcare sector.

At the Akwasidae celebration on January 19, Mahama addressed the country’s dire economic situation, pointing to soaring inflation, economic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default that has isolated Ghana from the international credit market.

He emphasized that while Ghana has faced such crises before, the current one presents unprecedented challenges.

Reflecting on past cooperation with the Asantehene, Mahama said, “During my presidency, whenever we faced obstacles, I called on Your Royal Majesty to use your influence and diplomacy to help steer the nation towards stability. I am confident that I can count on you again in these challenging times.”

The Asantehene, represented by the paramount Chief of Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, urged President Mahama to fulfill all promises made to Ghanaians, especially the ongoing development projects within the Ashanti Kingdom.
