The Electoral Commission (EC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violent disturbances at its offices during the collation of polling station results for the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Describing the incidents as unacceptable, the EC condemned the threats to staff, destruction of property, and the presence of unidentified individuals in military uniforms among the attackers.

The violence erupted as the EC attempted to resume result collation on January 17, following a High Court order. In a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, the EC revealed that the Ghana Police Service had alerted them to potential security risks, but failed to provide adequate protection at the collation centers.

This security lapse allowed supporters, reportedly led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to invade both the Old Head Office and the new Corporate Head Office of the Commission. The invaders destroyed furniture, windows, and other property while issuing threats that forced staff to flee the premises.

The EC confirmed that video evidence of the perpetrators is available and urged the Ghana Police Service to take swift action.

“We call on the Police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book by identifying, arresting, and prosecuting them,” the statement read.

The Commission also appealed to the government to ensure that the Police provide adequate security to prevent further disruptions and allow the EC to complete its mandate.

Reassuring the public, the EC reaffirmed its commitment to declaring a winner for Ablekuma North but emphasized that a secure environment is crucial for the integrity of its operations.
