The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Richard Ahiagbah, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his campaign pledge by signing the contentious Anti-Gay Bill into law.

This call follows President Mahama’s recent remarks suggesting that a government-sponsored bill might be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill. According to him, such an approach would allow for broader consultations and foster national consensus.

During a meeting with Ghanaian bishops on Tuesday, January 14, the President also emphasized revising school curricula to promote moral and cultural values rooted in Ghanaian and African traditions.

However, in a Facebook post on Thursday, January 16, Mr. Ahiagbah accused President Mahama of reneging on his 2024 campaign promise to pass the LGBTQ+ Bill in its current form. He challenged the President to act decisively, warning that “elections come with consequences.”

“The President must stop running away from his pledge to Ghanaians. Sign the LGBTQ+ Bill as promised without delay!” Ahiagbah wrote.

The controversial bill seeks to criminalize activities promoting or supporting LGBTQI advocacy, with penalties for individuals and organizations involved. While advocates argue the bill protects Ghanaian family values, critics view it as a violation of fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and equality under the law.
