Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has called on the current GFA administration to engage a sports psychologist to address potential psychological issues impacting the Black Stars’ performance.

The team’s recent struggles, culminating in their unprecedented failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations after 20 years, have sparked widespread criticism and calls for significant changes within the team.

Nyantakyi attributed the team’s poor performance to underlying psychological factors within the technical team. He cited an incident during the Niger match in Accra, where Head Coach Otto Addo stormed the pitch after a late consolation goal, as evidence of potential underlying psychological issues.

“I believe that, in addition to the players, Otto Addo and the technical team would benefit greatly from the guidance of a sports psychologist,” Nyantakyi stated in an interview with Asempa FM. “The incident where Otto Addo stormed the pitch after scoring a late goal against Niger clearly indicates the presence of psychological issues within the team.”

With crucial World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar approaching in March, Nyantakyi’s suggestion to incorporate psychological support could prove to be a crucial step in addressing the team’s current challenges and improving their on-field performance.
