The Foundation of the Election Review Team is Weak; Our 2024 Election Defeat Was Devastating – NPP’s Nana Obiri Boahen

- Reflects on past review committees that failed to produce meaningful results
- Calls for the NPP to approach opposition with the "fear of God" and address internal challenges
A former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, has strongly criticized the newly-formed 11-member committee tasked with investigating the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 general election.
In an interview, Lawyer Obiri Boahen described the NPP’s defeat as “huge” and “unprecedented,” stressing that the committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, lacks proper regional representation.
He argued that the committee’s foundation is weak and that without regional representation, the review process will fall short of addressing the root causes of the party’s failure.
“The defeat is very heavy. There should be regional representation in the committee. They should thread cautiously,” he asserted.
He reflected on past election review committees formed in 2008 and 2020, which ultimately failed to produce any meaningful reports, further highlighting the flaws in the party’s approach to self-assessment.
Lawyer Obiri Boahen also pointed to the low voter turnout in many NPP constituencies, with some failing to even record half of the expected vote.
Despite this, he remained hopeful, acknowledging the party’s “herculean task” ahead, while also lamenting internal issues such as selfishness, arrogance, and sabotage among certain party members since 2017.
“The NPP has a peculiar task. It is not easy at all. The defeat was due to apathy, but sometimes that’s good. I’ve seen it all, from selfish interests to sabotage,” he said.
“As a former Deputy General Secretary, I have experienced a lot. The kind of NPP members we had in 2006 is very different from those we had in 2017. There was more love, unity, and cooperation among the members in 2006 compared to 2017. In 2006, every Regional Chairman had the opportunity to go to Germany to watch the World Cup.”
He warned that the NPP must brace for the challenges of opposition, advising party members to have the “fear of God” as they navigate this new phase.
