A former HMP Wandsworth officer, Linda De Sousa Abreu, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being filmed engaging in sexual activity with an inmate.
The clip, which quickly went viral after being shared online, led to her identification by senior prison staff.
The 30-year-old, who was arrested at Heathrow Airport while attempting to board a flight to Madrid, pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office. Governor Andrew Davy of Wandsworth stated that Abreu’s actions had severely damaged the reputation of female staff working in all-male prisons, eroding years of effort to maintain professionalism.
In court, it was revealed that Abreu had also been recorded performing a sex act with the same inmate on her prison-issue body camera. Judge Martin Edmunds KC highlighted that the viral video was part of a pattern of repeated misconduct. The Prison Service has vowed to continue its efforts to root out corrupt officers, emphasizing that they will take “robust action” against those who break the rules.
